Spontaneous architecture

A must see "spontaneous architecture", as we here say, in Apulia.

The trulli are made of roughly worked limestone boulders collected from neighbouring fields. Characteristically, they feature pyramidal, domed or conical roofs built up of corbelled limestone slabs.

Nowadays the trulli are protected under the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) world heritage law.

The Committee decided to inscribe the nominated property on the basis of cultural criteria, considering that the site is of outstanding universal value being an exceptional example of a form of building construction deriving from prehistoric construction techniques that have survived intact and functioning into the modern world.

The trullo and its rooms usually have a square plan, in the inside "Alcove" are niches and sleeping seats created in the walls as like as rooms. The trullo maker knows and utilizes the round arch building with wood centres, with two different kinds of stones: “chiancole" are flooring stones and "chianche" are roof stones. The main room acts as dining and living room. The kitchen and the other rooms come together to it.

Still today during summer our country is full of people who wants to enjioy 'the holiday' in a trullo, there are many who possess a property with trullo or lamia (the typical room with a tar shaped roof), most of them inherited. 'The holiday' was born as requirement for the craftsmen to move to the country in order to escape to the summery warmth and to rest after a year of hard work (think that in trullo the air is “naturally conditioned', the structure in stone with the wide walls beyond a meter creates a fresh atmosphere in summer and warmth in winter). This fashion has been emulated from other Italian people and foreign people, so that today there is an important request of rural rooms above all from the foreign markets (English in particular).

A stay in a trullo is an experience and an emotion that transmits indeed a feeling of well-being and relaxation for the rest of body and mind. You find yourself in full-immersion in tranquillity oases, with the possibility, in some structures, to take a walk in the country and to collect fruits of season (figs, plums, grape, pears) to consume into the coolness of the trullo or seated under a great olive tree.

Hope you like it.
